Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth removal is one of the most common surgical procedures performed by Dr. Nishimoto. Wisdom teeth (also known as third molars) are the last teeth to develop and erupt into the mouth, usually between the ages of 17 and 25. While some wisdom teeth grow in normally, most mouths are too small to accommodate a third set of molars. When a tooth doesn’t fully erupt into the mouth, it is usually impacted and unable to break completely through the gums because there isn’t enough room.

An impacted wisdom tooth can damage neighboring teeth or lead to infection. Because these areas of the mouth are difficult to clean, a wisdom tooth can develop a cavity or collect bacteria leading to gum disease. Oral bacteria can travel through your bloodstream and potentially lead to infections and illness affecting your heart and other organs. In some cases, a cyst or tumor can form around the impacted tooth, which can lead to more serious problems, including damage to adjacent teeth or other surrounding structures.

In most cases, it is best to remove the wisdom teeth to prevent future problems associated with wisdom teeth. We recommend having wisdom teeth removed before the roots are fully formed. The ideal time for wisdom teeth removal is usually between the age of 16 and the early twenties. If you are unsure whether your wisdom teeth need to be removed, contact our office to schedule a consultation with Dr. Nishimoto.

Do I Need My Wisdom Teeth Removed?

Generally, a wisdom tooth should be removed if it presents with:

  • Dental pain and tenderness near tooth sites

  • Poor oral hygiene

  • Bone loss

  • Infection

  • Periodontal (gum) disease

  • Cavities

  • Cysts, tumors or other pathology

  • Damage to neighboring teeth

Procedure

The procedure will start with an initial consultation with Dr. Nishimoto, who will complete an oral examination, medical review, and X-ray evaluation of your wisdom teeth. Dr. Nishimoto will help determine the best treatment plan for you and discuss your options. At the consultation, we will also discuss your anesthesia options, including IV sedation. Dr. Nishimoto can perform outpatient anesthesia in our office. Your consultation is the ideal time to ask any questions you may have about your upcoming procedure.
